Who are the Characters in Number the Stars?
- Annemarie
Johansen is one
of the main
characters in this book. She is a tall ten
year old who is aware of the limitations the war has put on her
family’s daily existence. Annemarie finds
the strength and courage to go on a dangerous mission to save her best
friend, Ellen’s life.
- Ellen Rosen is
another one of the main
character in this book. She is Annemarie’s
schoolmate and best friend, who is Jewish. Ellen
is very studious and more serious than her best friend.
She likes to play paper dolls and is afraid of the war.
- Mrs. Johansen is
Annemarie’s mother.
She put her life at risk to help save Ellen and her family from the
Nazis.
- Peter Neilsen is
part of the
resistance movement and is an effective leader of the plan to get the
Rosens to safety.
- Kirsti Johansen is
Annemarie’s five
year old sister, who is very feisty and chatty girl.
She loves stories about kings and queens.
- Henrik is Mrs.
Johansen’s younger
brother who is a fisherman in the town of Gillelje. Henrik
plays an important role in saving Ellen and her family by smuggling
them and other Jews to Sweden in his boat.
- Mr. Johansen is the
father of
Annemarie who is deeply patriotic and willing to die for Denmark.
- Lise Johansen is
Annemarie’s sister
who dies around the end of 1941. She was a
member of the Resistance with Peter.
- Mr. & Mrs. Rosen
are Ellen’s
father and mother, who need to escape to Sweden do to the Nazis.
- Mrs. Hirsch
is the owner of a corner
shop, who is Jewish.
