Context

This WebQuest was developed as part of our Literacy, Technology, and Instruction course during our Undergraduate study at Appalachian State University. The WebQuest contains a technology literacy lesson plan for first graders, which provides the students with various links to media, numerical, and informational literacy resources. The students are asked to explore the life and stages of a butterfly. Through this process students will compose their own butterfly storybook by using the resources provided through this WebQuest.

Impact

This WebQuest corresponds to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Art, Computer, English (Language Arts), Math, and Science and the competencies can be found on the Teacher Resource Page. By completing the booklet students will combine the subject curriculums for the first grade standard course of study. This WebQuest will be available to Spanish literate students.

Alignment

The WebQuest includes a lesson and project that students will complete in which they will explore the uses of technology with the Internet at home and at school. The arrows and pictures guide the students and help them work through the WebQuest with ease. There are multiple resources available through the WebQuest for the student. Also, the teacher can locate more information with the resources that are listed (11.2). The WebQuest has a story and journal that allow the student to read at their own pace. At the conclusion of the project each student will have their own booklet they produced by using what they read, as well as, various Internet sources (11.1). Within the project activities the student will use the computer and its programs to point, click, and print out pages, etc. (11.3). The students will locate and use keys on the keyboard to complete their activities (10.4). Within this WebQuest the students use the Internet, the mouse to point and click, the keys on the keyboard, and are able to use the computer at school as well as at home (10.1). In locating lesson plans, as well as the various goals for first graders, we were able to construct a lesson for the students (10.3). Using the guidelines from the NC Standard Course of Study, we were able to find age appropriate materials for first graders (10.6). By using the Internet we were able to find a journal on becoming a butterfly as well as a worksheet with the different stages. This could be used in place of a classroom science lesson (12.7). Students are asked to complete a number of activities throughout the WebQuest and bring them together by making a book. After the project is completed they will share their book with the class (12.1). The completed booklet will let the teacher see what the student has learned from the project (12.2). This WebQuest allows the student to take their booklet home to share with their parents and other family members. We have also included a take home activity the students may complete with the help of their parents (12.3). In the introduction there is a time in which the project must be completed but otherwise the student is free to move at his/her own pace. The students are given the option to choose which pages they would like to print and color to assemble their booklet (13.1). The students present their findings in their booklet to show others what they have learned throughout this project. Within the booklet there are specific papers that need to be included. However, students are encouraged to choose additional papers they would like to incorporate. This activity promotes imagination in each of the students (12.5). We have provided a resource page to give credit to the people that we borrowed activities and links from to create our WebQuest. Informing the students of the various reasons for proper citations (i.e.. borrowing links, etc.) will be discussed with the class (14.3). This WebQuest has been modified with a link for Spanish literate students (13.3).
